OUR SHEA In Acholi, shea butter is moo yaa. The wild shea tree, yaa (Vitellaria nilotica), grows across Northern Uganda. Its butter is naturally softer and creamier than West African shea and melts at the touch. Acholi women have handcrafted it for generations, using it as a cooking oil and as a balm for skin and babies. Collecting wild shea supports rural women's livelihoods. Local cooperatives have applied for geographical-indication protection to safeguard the heritage of Acholi shea.
